Gail Smallman
Creator of The Miceverse Chronicles and mastermind behind Smallman Publishing.

About Gail
I'm Gail Smallman, a Scottish-born author and creator now based in Cumbria, England. I'm a little bit introverted, a little bit extroverted (somewhere in the ambivert territory), and generally quite happy in my own little world.
I'm quite content being at home, surrounded by my comforts and many ideas. It usually takes something particularly exciting, interesting or ridiculously pretty to tempt me out! Although a beautiful beach, an interesting place to explore or a good opportunity for a bit of beachcombing can certainly do the trick.
I have an inquisitive mind, an overactive imagination and a never-ending list of things I'd like to learn, make or try. I love storytelling, creativity, discovering new skills and exploring all the different ways an idea can be brought to life.
My Creative Journey
My journey into independent publishing began with an idea inspired by my son Eli and his imaginative virtual creations.
What started as a concept gradually evolved into The Miceverse Chronicles, a fictional universe filled with characters, locations and adventures. As the project developed, so did my ambitions. I found myself learning about book production, cover design, illustration, formatting, publishing and all the many details involved in turning an idea into a finished book. And now even website design!
One project soon led to another, and I began exploring ways to take those creations beyond the written page.
What started as a writing project eventually became the inspiration for something much bigger: Smallman Publishing, a family creative venture bringing together stories, artwork and music.
A Creative Mind, Many Mediums
Writing is just one part of my creative journey, but my interests certainly don't stop at the written page.
I'm happiest when I'm making something, and I'm not particularly fussy about what that something is or which materials I use! I love experimenting with different mediums, learning new techniques and finding creative uses for all sorts of things.
From collecting seaglass and interesting beachcombing finds to needle felting with wool, painting, pastels, crayons and pens, I enjoy exploring both traditional crafts and more unusual ways of creating.
I'm equally drawn to the natural world, experimenting with flowers and natural materials and finding ways to incorporate them into creative projects.
And then there's the ever-growing list of things I'd still like to try! Metalwork, pottery, lino printing, jewellery making and plenty more are all waiting patiently for their turn.
Through Smallman Publishing, I've brought together three creative disciplines:
For me, creativity isn't confined to one particular skill or medium. It's about curiosity, experimentation and the enjoyment of turning an idea into something tangible.
There's always something new to learn, something else to try and, inevitably, another hobby to add to the list. My ADHD brain rarely settles on just one creative outlet. Why master one craft when you can enthusiastically start twelve? 😂
The Smallman Creative Family
Smallman Publishing is a family creative venture, and I'm certainly not the only one with stories to tell!

My gorgeous boy Eli was the inspiration behind The Miceverse Chronicles and is now developing stories of his own, including his Creeped Out series. With a mind that never seems to switch off, he's rarely short of ideas! Sometimes his thoughts move considerably faster than his hands can record them, but there's certainly no shortage of imagination.
I want to support him in whatever creative pursuits he chooses throughout his life. He's good at sports and academically, he's a really practical kid, and he has a fantastic imagination. I hope I can help him explore all his talents and find ways to enjoy using them.

My wonderful husband David is currently developing his own fictional universe, Second Age of Man, an ambitious saga that is beginning to take shape through brainstorming, research and world-building.
David normally helps take the ideas and visions that Eli and I create, and he helps make them come to life. He doesn't actually see himself as particularly creative, but I disagree.
Now it's our turn to help him turn his creative thoughts into life.
Will it ever turn out that he publishes a book? Who knows. But watch this space.
We each have our own interests, ideas and creative ambitions, and Smallman Publishing gives us somewhere to bring them together and share them with others.
What's Next?
The Miceverse Chronicles is still growing, with further adventures and creative projects on the horizon. There are also plenty of other ideas brewing, some already taking shape and others still scribbled somewhere in a notebook!
Beyond that, who knows? There are stories to write, crafts to explore, things to learn and probably several new hobbies waiting to distract me.
I don't believe creativity needs to follow a straight line, and I'm quite happy to see where it takes me.
